In this talk Dr. Gianni Cicali (Georgetown University) will explore the migrations of Italian actors and artists (singers, composers, librettists, architects) that preceded and continued alongside the mass migrations from Italy. Tracing these experiences of migration will shed light on another important chapter in the Italian diaspora while showing how, the idea of Italy that travelled abroad through the movement of professionals, prepared the ground for the creation of the ?Made in Italy? concept.
About the speaker: Dr. Gianni Cicali is Associate Professor of Italian at Georgetown University. His research interests focus on Italian theater, opera and culture from the 15th to the 18th century as well as Renaissance and Baroque religious theater. He has lectured extensively in those fields both in North America and internationally. Among his numerous publications are a book on ?Opera buffa? entitled Attori e ruoli nell'opera buffa italiana del Settecento (2005), and one on the invention of the cross in Florentine Renaissance theatre, L'Inventio crucis nel teatro rinascimentale fiorentino (2012). In addition, he edited a volume on theater and performance titled Teatro italiano fra testo performance e scena (2015). Dr. Cicali has produced and staged three plays with his students at Georgetown University: Gl?Innamorati [The Lovers] by Carlo Goldoni, Barlaam and Josafat by Bernardo Pulci, and a Jesuit play entitled Attore e martire based on Baroque Italian and French texts on the life and deeds of St Genest, the patron saint of actors. Dr. Cicali has also been chief editor of Quaderni d?italianistica and is a member of the Advisory Board of journals such as Letteratura teatrale italiana (Italy), Quaderni d'italianistica (Canada), and Gentes (Italy), and of the Editorial board of Renaissance and Reformation.
