7:30 PM Book Signing: Q Karmue Warwick's will host Q Karmue as he discusses and signs his new book, Witness: A Civil War Through The Eyes of A Child. Quanuquanei A. Karmue, better known as Q, is a survivor of the Liberian Civil War, activist, artist, and president/founder of Save More Kids, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the lives of Liberia's children and rebuilding a country left in devastating conditions. This event is free and open to the public. Reserved Seating is available when the book is pre-ordered from Warwick's for the event. Only books purchased from Warwick's will be signed. Please call the Warwick's Book Dept. (858) 454-0347 for details.

Witness: A Civil War Through The Eyes of A Child is the true story written by "Q" Quanuquanei Karmue as he recounts of his family's separation by civil war. When a peaceful childhood in Liberia changed in an instant, 8-year-old Q was thrown into the bloodshed, terror, and violence of the Liberian Civil War. Confronted with massacred villages, child soldiers, constant hunger, and the daily threat of death from rebel forces and government troops, Q and his four siblings eventually made it through the horrors of war through the power, grace, and determination of his mother, Neyor.

Witness takes you back to 1990 through Q's reflections and experiences in the Liberian Civil War - from the once sleepy, safe village of Sugar Hill to surviving through destroyed farmland, drug-crazed child soldiers, and body-strewn streets - all while his mother fights to protect her children. Ultimately, a confrontation with a ruthless child tears the family apart and requires that his mother make a devastating choice between her life and her children's. Witness will open your eyes to the darkest and most beautiful parts of humanity and make you see that on the other side of evil is good.

8:00 PM Silent Film: Carmen Movies by Moonlight: A Silent Film Festival at La Jolla Historical Society.

Presented by Scott Paulson (LJHS Silent Film Curator) with support from the UC San Diego Library and live music from Scott and the Teeny-Tiny Pit Orchestra.

The Lawn opens at 7:00 PM—bring a picnic dinner and a low beach chair or blanket.

This is the 1915 Silent film version of Carmen. Helmed by legendary director Cecil B. DeMille and loosely based on the Prosper Mérimée novella, this early silent drama concerns hot-blooded gypsy Carmen (Geraldine Farrar) and her attempts to seduce Don Jose (Wallace Reid), a lawman sent to thwart a gang of illegal smugglers in Spain. Carmen's plan backfires when Don Jose's passion for the gypsy girl escalates into a jealous rage as she spurns him for her bullfighter beau, Escamillo (Pedro de Cordoba), with tragic results.
