6:00 PM Lecture: Carrie Mae Weems A celebrated artist known for exploring issues of race, gender, class and how the present can be understood through history and identity. Named a MacArthur Fellow in 2013, Weems continues to engage local communities through art and activism.

Considered one of the most influential contemporary American artists, Carrie Mae Weems has investigated family relationships, cultural identity, sexism, class, political systems and the consequences of power. Determined as ever to enter the picture—both literally and metaphorically—Weems has sustained an on-going dialogue within contemporary discourse for over thirty years. During this time, Carrie Mae Weems has developed a complex body of art employing photographs, text, fabric, audio, digital images, installation and video.

7:30 PM Stage: Más A docudrama about the dismantling of Tucson Unified School District's Mexican American Studies program or MAS. This cultural conflict is brought to life in an abstract sweat lodge where dancers represent the Mexican deities of life's natural forces. Más engages the audience in the debates around the passage in 2010 of Arizona House Bill 2281, which effectively banned the MAS program. The play's balance of poetry and reenactment captures the soul of the movement and also tells a contemporary story of community.
