Cultural Note: The SeaWorld entertainment includes Japanese Taiko drumming. However, Japanese New Year, unlike many other Asian cultures and countries falls on January 1st. Five years into the Meiji era (1873) the first day of January became the official and cultural New Year's Day in Japan.

2:00 PM  40th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade The 40th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Parade takes place on Monday, January 20th. This is one of the largest celebrations of its kind in the United States in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The parade is filled with dazzling floats, phenomenal High School Bands, Drill Teams, College, Fraternities & Sororities, Churches, Peace and Youth organizations.

This parade is coordinated by the Zeta Sigma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., the oldest African American fraternity in America, founded in 1906. The seven men who founded this organization at Cornell University in New York recognized the need for a strong bond of Brotherhood among African descendants in this country. Dr. King was also an Alpha.

Come and join thousands of others and help continue the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

2:00 PM Seijinshiki: Japanese Coming of Age Ceremony Hosted by the Japanese Friendship Garden, Azunakai, and the San Diego Yokohama Sister City Society, the Coming of Age Ceremony (Japanese: "Seijin-shiki") is an important rite of passage for many young Japanese adults in Japan, just turning twenty.

Many of them attend a ceremony at their local community center, dressed in traditional kimono or western suits to celebrate the new chapter in their lives. Unmarried women have the chance to wear the elaborate long-sleeved kimono called furisode.

Families and friends will take many photos together on this occasion.

Students from all cultures and backgrounds are highly encouraged to participate in this event. Kimono rental service is available upon request and participants are welcome to wear any other formal or cultural attire.

Themes of gender frequently appear in Shakespeare’s plays and are part of the plot in Twelfth Night. This production will explore gender identity through Shakespeare’s text and gender-fluid casting.
