Ion Theatre
|
Glenn Paris and Claudio Raygoza leased and rehabbed a spacious downtown storefront last year, naming the place on Ninth Avenue near the library the New World Theatre. When the Centre City Development Corporation took over the building, regulations changed and the company was out. Paris and Raygoza stored the seats and lighting grids. Now, the equipment is in use again at their Lab Theatre in the Academy of Performing Arts on Alvarado Canyon Road in Mission Valley.
The mission of Ion Theatre Company is to ignite community change by staging bold, re-imagined classics and fostering the premieres of dynamic new plays for a contemporary audience while inspiring its company of artists to create passionate, unique, risk-taking work.
First-time Ion-goers give yourself extra time to find The Lab theater, tucked behind the Trolley Station. You'll feel like you're going in the wrong direction, down a desolate driveway, but keep going. Rewards await.
