Anna Thorvaldsdottir's METACOSMOS plunges the listener into a vast maelstrom of cosmic forces tugging in all directions until finally colliding into what the composer calls unified chaos, followed by George Walker's Lyric for Strings and Margaret Bonds' The Montgomery Variations. The concert will conclude with John Adams's profound and reflective masterpiece, On the Transmigration of Souls, written in the year following the September 11 attacks in New York City.
The Montgomery Variations is a symphonic work by Margaret Bonds that documents the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s. Anna Sigríður Þorvaldsdóttir [anna sɪɣriðʏr θɔrvaldsdoutɪr] is an Icelandic composer. She has been called "one of Iceland's most celebrated composers", and was the 2012 winner of the Nordic Council Music Prize.
