The SDAFF Closing Night Film is Moustache by Imran J. Khan.
Inspired by his own upbringing as an immigrant kid in the 90s, Imran J. Khan spins a classic genre (the coming-of-age film) into a stylish comedy of Bay Area South Asian families, co-starring no less than 90s icon Alicia Silverstone. But if the 90s weren’t the best times for Muslim representation onscreen, MUSTACHE is a refreshing inversion, depicting devout families with a peppy normalcy, no more an obstacle of adolescence than cute girls and parties with alcohol. With a winning deadpan performance by Atharva Verma in the lead, and appearances by Hasan Minhaj and Rizwan Manji, MUSTACHE is a sweetly comic tribute to young love, playacting, and facial hair.</p>
The San Diego Asian Film Festival (SDAFF) is San Diego’s premier film showcase of Asian American and international cinema. Founded in 2000, the festival has grown to become the largest exhibition of Asian cinema in the western United States, and has showcased everything from future classics like Bong Joon-ho’s Memories of Murder (US Premiere) to luminary independent work like Patrick Wang’s award-winning In the Family (North American Premiere). Each year, the festival brings West Coast, North American, and World premieres of films from around the world to San Diego and gives audiences unique opportunities to discover international cinema.
This year, the 24th edition of SDAFF will showcase 160+ films from 30+ countries, in 30+ languages from November 2-11, 2023.
