Moulin Rouge! is a 2001 Australian-American musical romantic drama film directed, co-produced, and co-written by Baz Luhrmann. The film stars Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman as a young poet and a star courtesan who fall in love in Paris at the Moulin Rouge. The year is 1899. Christian, a young English writer, has come to Paris to follow the Bohemian revolution taking hold of the city's drug and prostitute infested underworld. He meets Satine, the star courtesan of the Moulin Rouge, and they fall in love. However, Satine is already promised to the Duke of Monroth, a wealthy and powerful man who is funding the Moulin Rouge's next production. Christian and Satine must keep their love a secret, but as the production of the show gets underway, their feelings for each other grow stronger. The Duke becomes suspicious of Satine's relationship with Christian, and he threatens to destroy the Moulin Rouge if she does not marry him.
