To honor Juneteenth as an important part of American History, please join us for Juneteenth at UC San Diego Park & Market: A Celebration of Black Art, Music, and Community on Sunday, June 18 from 12:00 to 7:00 PM. This event includes a black-owned business market, a panel discussion on “What does liberation mean in the 21st Century?”, and live music throughout the day. The festivities conclude with a Neo Soul Performance by some of San Diego's best musicians. This free event is open to the public and includes complimentary food and beverages.
Juneteenth commemorates an effective end of slavery in the United States which occurred on June 19, 1865, when the enslaved people of Galveston, TX received the news they were free. In 2021, President Biden’s administration made Juneteenth a federal holiday. In 2023, San Diego will celebrate the day as the first official City Holiday by proclamation of Council member Monica Montgomery Steppe. Juneteenth, also known as America’s Second Independence Day, is an opportunity to celebrate Black freedom and to highlight and amplify the accomplishments and contributions that Black Americans have made in the United States. Black History is American History.
This celebratory event was made possible by support from the County of San Diego Black Chamber of Commerce, and our Community Partners Courtney Dade, Terrell Thompson, and Blake Dye.
