During its long heyday as the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire (330-1453) and later of the Ottoman Empire (1453-1922), the city of Constantinople (modern Istanbul) was the crossroads of Europe, West Asia and North Africa, the multicultural nexus of the Christian and Muslim worlds. The Canadian ensemble Constantinople honors this heritage with a program drawing on the musical traditions of the civilizations that met in the great metropolis, playing instruments from both the Middle East and Renaissance Europe.
In this program, the ensemble, with Italian tenor and musicologist Marco Beasley, will go back to the year 1502, when the Italian polymath Leonardo da Vinci proposed to the Ottoman Sultan a design for a bridge across the Bosphorus, essentially uniting Europe and Asia.
