Join San Diego native Dr. Caroline Collins (UCSD and UC Irvine), the Exhibit Researcher of our current exhibition, We Are Not Strangers Here: African American Histories in Rural California (August 28 – October 23) as she discusses the curation process and the significance of the exhibit with Dr. Angela Booker (UCSD).
The exhibit highlights the hidden histories of African American farmers, ranchers, and rural residents who have shaped California’s food and farming culture from statehood to the present. Rural Black residents opened schools, worked the land, and fought for equal rights. Over successive migrations in the 19th and 20th centuries, generations settled in agricultural and rural areas from as far north as Siskiyou County to the Imperial Valley in the South.
