Lecture: How to Find Your 2,600 Year-old Chinese Family Roots

The San Diego Chinese Historical Museum is partnering with the SDSU Chinese Cultural Center to bring monthly remote educational programming to our community via this series of talks and discussions. This series offers unique insights into Chinese history, Chinese culture, American history and lifeways of Chinese Americans, with a particular focus on objects represented in the Museum’s permanent collection.

On April 23, we will be joined by Her Excellency, Ambassador Elena A. Wachong Ho. Ambassador Wachong’s lecture will focus on the global barriers to finding Chinese Diaspora Family Roots for non-Chinese speakers. She provides tips on how to overcome the language barriers. Her personal experience is titled: “Chinese Tales®: Recovering 106 Generations of your Chinese Family Roots: The Life-long Quest of Overseas-born Chinese Families”

Ambassador Elena Wachong started writing her family’s history 40 years ago in Costa Rica. In the process, she has been able to discover unbroken, continuous written records, tracing the Lü Clan back to 960 BCE. An alumna of Wellesley College, Ambassador Wachong has worked with a number of private and governmental institutions. She was appointed to serve as Ambassador of Costa Rica in 1996.

Bob Stein (M.D., Thomas Jefferson University Jefferson Medical College) is an experienced museum docent, who graduated from the SDMA Docent Training Program in 2016. He retired from a career as a cardiologist and staff member at Palomar Hospital, where he served in many different leadership roles. He joined the SDCHM as a member of our Board of Directors in 2020 and is serving as interim Director.

Dr. Lai Sai Acon is a full professor at the School of Modern Languages at the University of Costa Rica. She is the lead coordinator of the Red Sinolatina (the Latin and Hispanic American Academic Network of Sinological Studies) in Costa Rica She received her Ph.D. in English Literature from Washington State University.

Judith Rubenstein received her B.A. from Wellesley College and her Ed.D. from Harvard Graduate School of Education. Dr. Rubenstein teaches English as a Second Language and Adult Basic Education. She is the author of numerous books and articles, and owns the publishing house, Granite Hills Press.
