In this presentation, Jungmin Lee a professor of economics at Seoul National University introduces a series of research works on North Korea he has done with his collaborators since 2011. His research team has used refugees as a window to take a glimpse at people in North Korea. In particular, they have conducted not only surveys and skill tests but also controlled economic experiments on refugees with South Korean native and Korean-Chinese comparison groups. This presentation will highlight the importance of institutions for preferences and human capital development and explore implications for the Korean unification.
