Haydn Voyages: Music at the Maritime sixth season at Maritime Museum of San Diego Provides a unique floating musical experience.

The Hausmann Quartet and Maritime Museum of San Diego are excited to partner to present the sixth season of Haydn Voyages: Music at the Maritime, a quarterly concert series performed aboard one of the Museum’s ten historic world-class vessels, the 1898 steam ferryboat Berkeley that operated for 60 years on San Francisco Bay. Enjoy world-class performances from San Diego’s only floating concert hall!

Concerts aboard the Berkeley, also a national historic landmark docked in downtown San Diego next to Star of India, explore the evolution of the string quartet through the lens of Joseph Haydn’s quartet cycle.

Two works that explore the folk music of their native lands in striking ways anchor this concert: Bela Bartok’s Third String Quartet (1927) is his shortest, yet packs extraordinary power and variety in its creative use of raucous dance rhythms and haunting melodies. The afternoon’s two Haydn quartets (opus 17/6 and 64/6) both feature creative use of popular idioms and tunes, with Haydn’s characteristic blend of the most fashionable trends of the time and more rustic, everyday folk material. Shelley Washington’s Middleground (from 2016) is a celebration and reminiscence of places and feelings from the composer’s upbringing, “the space grounded, the between, the center[…]Home of the heart, heart of the home.”
