3:00 PM Class: DIY Miso Soup In this hands-on workshop, you will learn all about miso, a magical fermented bean paste that originated in Japan many centuries ago. Miso is full of umami and is used to flavor everything from soups to marinades and salad dressings, stir-fries, to eggs. Cool weather is ideal for making miso, when the air is relatively free of contaminating microorganisms. Miso prepared during cold months will be ready by the following November, after the summer heat subsides and fall breezes set in. We will talk about the history of miso, its many different forms and then make a large batch using various legumes. You'll get to taste various misos to understand the fermentation process. You'll get to pack a mason jar full of miso to take home (but you'll have to wait a year to eat it). Then we'll enjoy one of the most popular homemade miso soup.

3:00 PM The Culture Of Art La Vie Art Dance and Culture showcases the cultural works of New York Artist, Preet Srivastava.

Preet Srivastava's work is both a representation of the cultures present within the American paradigm, as well as, a reflection of the complexity and depth of any culture in global transition. It narrates the spiritual, personal and political act of defining beyond the confines of a culturally biased discourse. It seeks to evoke that prophetic sense which liberates verbal communication while emanating very concisely, "I am not an object -- I am an evolving idea, ideal, identity -- identical to no one." - Vikas Srivastava

4:00 PM Intrinsic Matter: Opening Reception The Japanese Friendship Garden is proud to have both Sammy Seung-min Lee and Kazu Oba as the latest exhibitors in the Inamori Pavilion. Lee and Oba bring their native traditions to contemporary art forms. Lee practices Joomchi, a technique from Korea that manipulates and felts mulberry paper. Oba practices traditional Japanese ceramic pattern and gravitates more towards utsuwa. Utsuwa translates to vessel in English and Oba considers his vessels incomplete until they are properly used. The reception will be held at JFG's Inamori Pavilion where guests will be able to meet both artists, enjoy hors d'oeuvres and beverages, and get a first hand look at JFG's latest exhibit. Sammy Seung-min Lee will also be holding a felting and casting workshop the same day from 11 am to 4 :00 PM. During this workshop, attendees will learn the same techniques Lee uses when working with hanji, Korean mulberry paper. RSVP: registrar@niwa.org.

5:30 PM Bulgarian Dance: Xorotroptzi Bulgarian Folklore Dance Group Xorotroptzi presents choreographys from all Bulgarian ethnographic regions.

XoroTroptzi was founded in October of 2012 in Los Angeles, CA by Veselka Vasileva with the support and assistance of Alina Marinova.Veselka first discovered the beauty and uniqueness of Bulgarian folklore at an early age as a dancer and member of the dance ensemble, Nashencheta with choreographer Ivan Ivanov (Pleven, Bulgaria). She was instantly mesmerized by spectacular colors and intricacy of the folk costumes; uniqueness of the Bulgarian music and rhythms; and the diversity and radiance of the dances, but most importantly by the smiles and joy people experienced while dancing or watching a performance. Therefore, years later when she moved to the United States, she wanted to share her passion for Bulgarian folklore with fellow Bulgarians and anyone else who wanted to learn some of the most popular Bulgarian line-dancing steps and dances, called Xoro.

6:00 PM Music: Martin Nievera Martin comes from a family of singer on both sides. His Father is well known balladeer, Bert Nievera who was known as the Johnny Mathis of the Philippines. He gave 10 great years of his life performing with the premier show band from Honolulu Hawaii, "The Society of Seven." In those 10 years Hawaii was home and that's where Martin started dreaming of one day becoming a singer himself. What a lot of people don't know is on his mother's side his grandmother was metzo soprano, Lourdes Coralles who has never even seen Martin on any stage. She past away a few days after Martin was born on February 5, 1962, but she and Martin's, "Lolo" are remembered with every song he sings.
