1:00 PM Exhibition: KANTHA - Recycled and Embroidered Textiles of Bengal An art form based on the act of recycling, Mingei International Museum will feature traditional quilted textiles, lovingly created from the remnants of worn garments in KANTHA - Recycled and Embroidered Textiles of Bengal.

Kantha are made in what is today West Bengal, India and Bangladesh. The area of Bengal where the Ganges River flows into the Bay of Bengal has historically been the source of the finest cotton ever produced and of a kind of embroidery known as kantha created from this material.

Completely handmade and embroidered with thread taken from the colored borders of cast-off saris, kanthas depict vivid scenery and elements drawn from a rich local repertoire. They are often stitched in honor of births, weddings and other ceremonial occasions, and feature human figures, animals, gods and goddesses, buildings, and design motifs such as paisleys and pinwheels. Dating from the late 19th to the early 20th centuries, this exhibition features over 40 kanthas, including bed covers, mirror covers, wrapping cloths for books and other valuables, floor covers and mats, all from the museum's collection.
