1:00 PM Exhibition: KANTHA - Recycled and Embroidered Textiles of Bengal Celebrating an art form based on the act of recycling, Mingei International Museum will feature traditional quilted textiles, lovingly created from the remnants of worn garments in "KANTHA—Recycled and Embroidered Textiles of Bengal."

Kanthas are made in what is today-West Bengal, India, and Bangladesh. The area of Bengal, where the Ganges River flows into the Bay of Bengal, has historically been the source of the finest cotton ever produced, used in a kind of embroidery known as kantha.

Completely handmade and embroidered with thread taken from the colored borders of cast-off saris, kanthas depict vivid scenery and elements drawn from a rich local repertoire. They are often stitched in honor of births, weddings, and other ceremonial occasions; and they feature human figures, animals, gods and goddesses, buildings, and design motifs such as paisleys and pinwheels. Dating from the late 19th to the early 20th centuries, this exhibition features over 40 kanthas, including bed covers, mirror covers, wrapping cloths for books and other valuables, and floor covers and mats, all from the museum's collection.

Admission/Cost: $7 - $10
