12:00 AM Annual Meeting of the Southwest Seminar on Colonial Latin America The annual meeting of the Southwest Seminar on Colonial Latin America will take place at UC San Diego from October 5th to 7th, 2017. The Southwest Seminar is a collaborative effort among specialists from across the U.S. Southwest dedicated to promoting innovative approaches to the study of colonial Latin America. The Seminar's annual meetings serve as venues to exchange ideas and to encourage collegiality and conviviality among colonial Latin Americanists of varied backgrounds and with diverse research interests. Participants will present new works in progress, including dissertation chapters, articles in development, or sections of larger works. The eminent Latin American historian Eric Van Young will serve as senior commentator for the 2017 meeting.

9:00 AM Ocean Beach Oktoberfest "Southern California's wildest and only Oktoberfest party at the beach" kicks off Friday from noon to 6 p.m with the inaugural OktoberStretch featuring live music, yoga classes, and games on the grassy area overlooking the beach. The festivities pick up Saturday morning with a free Drill Instructor Workout on the beach at 9 AM followed by the annual Brat Trot (a 2K family beach run) and a 5K beach run that ends at the beer garden which has a Bavarian brewfest from 11:30 AM to 2:00 PM with unlimited tastings of 12 authentic Bavarian and homegrown Oktoberfest beers. A Ms. Oktoberfest competition, bratwurst-eating and stein-holding contests, and a Sausage Toss competition (with a prize of $500) close out the day.

10:00 AM Steampunk Expo Gaslight Steampunk Expo is hosting an all-ages fantasy-themed festival. Guests of honor include: Tim Powers, World Fantasy Award winning author of Last Call and Anubis Gates; LGBT Fine Artist & Illustrator Alex Ferruzca, whose artwork evokes his love of steampunk with classic Disney characters; and local San Diego electrical engineer (retired) and 3D artist Greg Barnhart, who goes by the artist name of Vandegraaff Gearheardt, who uses variety of electronic contraptions to create motion and light activated works of art using Victorian mantle clocks.

This year's theme is "Steam Worlds of Wonder," and we will be hosting a wide variety of special presentations including: the curator of the Cassidy Lewis Carroll (author of Alice In Wonderland) Special Collection located at the University of Southern California (USC), Zofia Lewinsky; a Flights of Fancy Fashion Show; tea dueling; various maker and costume workshops; the Steam Fantasy Ball, with music by the San Diego Vintage Jazz Band; competitive tea pot racing; and two short film festivals, including a special screening of the short student film Steamwrecked. The event also includes a Vendor Hall, Maker Display Room, Gaming Lounge, Outdoor Stage, and a variety of presentations by industry professionals and enthusiasts.

5:30 PM Italian Film Festival Gala: From Naples with Love Good company, splendid music, and a delicious feast await you. Featuring Buona Forchetta's Chef Matteo Cattaneo; BIGA's Chef Tae Dickey; Civico 1845's Chef Alfonso Pisacane; Piazza 1909's Chef Stefano Ceresoli, your taste buds are sure to be delighted! Each chef is there not only to woo you with a Neapolitan specialty but to give you a burning desire to speak Neapolitan!

This is a line-up of champions, but there will be more in music, dolci, coffee, marvelous wines, wonderful pictures of a hidden Naples from Lamia Khorshid. After the party, the SDIFF invites you to watch the comedy Troppo Napoletano, directed by Gianluca Asinelli. Troppo Napoletano is part of this special event.

Film synopsis: Deborah worries for her eleven-year-old son, Ciro, who is exhibiting signs of depression. Searching for a solution, Deborah takes Ciro to see Tommaso, a shy child psychologist. Ciro confesses that it's not his father's death that has got him down, it's his love for his classmate, the beautiful Ludovica. The two make a deal: Tomasso will help Ciro to win the affections of Ludovica, while Ciro gives Tomasso a hand at having a chance with his mother. A nice comedy in the beautiful settings of Napoli.

6:30 PM Italian Film: La Stoffa Dei Sogni A boat carrying a small acting company, together with a group of dangerous members of Camorra, wrecks on the shores of the island prison, Asinara, shortly after WWII. The director of the prison cannot distinguish the criminals from the actors. He has them to put on a play- a play that will tell him who the actors are.

8:00 PM Stage: Billy Elliot San Diego Musical Theatre and California Ballet present this co-production of "Billy Elliot," a Tony Award-winning musical with music by Elton John.

Set in Northern England against the turbulent miner's strike of 1984, 11-year-old Billy stumbles from the boxing ring into a ballet class. After discovering his extraordinary gift and passion for dance, Billy struggles to find acceptance from his coal-mining father.

This production is directed by Neil Dale, choreographed by Jared Nelson and stars San Diego native Charlie Garton as Billy Elliot.
