All Day Art & Empire: The Golden Age Of Spain The San Diego Museum of Art presents Art & Empire: The Golden Age of Spain, a diverse selection of more than 100 outstanding works produced by leading artists from Spain and its global territories.

Art & Empire: The Golden Age of Spain is the first exhibition in the United States to expand the notion of the "Golden Age" to include the Hispanic world beyond the shores of the Iberian Peninsula. Such far-flung Spanish-controlled centers as Antwerp, Naples, Mexico, Lima, and the Philippines are represented by paintings, sculpture and decorative arts of astounding quality and variety from the pivotal years of about 1660 to 1750.

Artists featured in the exhibition include Diego Velázquez, Peter Paul Rubens, Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, Francisco de Zurbarán, Jusepe de Ribera, El Greco, Juan de Valdés Leal, Juan Sánchez Cotán, and many more. This exhibition also marks the first time since the 1935 exhibition for the California Pacific International Exposition that all five of the Spanish masters represented on the Museum's building façade — Velázquez, Murillo, Zurbarán, Ribera and El Greco — will be shown together at the museum.

There will also be a wide variety of public programming to complement the show, find details here.

This event takes place every year on August 20, or the Sunday that is closest to that date. This day is significant because it is in memory of the first King of Hungary, King Stephen I (St. Stephen). The entertainment is usually provided by the Karpatok Folkdance Ensemble from Los Angeles and Joann and Joe Semegi from Sun City to entertain the crowd with beautiful Hungarian folk dances and songs.

The food served on that day, besides the Hungarian sausage sandwich, are crepes (palacsinta), fried dough (langos) and authentic Hungarian pastries.

8:00 PM Stage: Romeo and Juliet After his smash-hit Othello and record-breaking Hamlet, Barry Edelstein returns to the Shakespeare Festival to take on the greatest love story of all time. Verona's Montague and Capulet families have been feuding for ages, and whenever they meet, violence breaks out. But when Romeo glimpses Juliet across a crowded dance floor, something different happens. Can star-crossed love survive in a world of rivalry and rage? With a plot featuring a masqued ball, sleeping potions, and
all-out brawling in the street, wrapped in a text full of soaring poetry, it's no wonder Romeo and Juliet has inspired countless adaptations, from ballets to movies to musicals like West Side Story. Young love has never been as dangerous or delightful as it is in Shakespeare's romantic masterpiece, brought to vivid life on our outdoor stage under the stars.
