All Day Czech Marionettes in Balboa Park Big Joe uses traditional Czech marionettes to tell the story of Princess Phoebe's Birthday Present. Czech puppetry was imported in the late 17th Century by itinerant puppeteers from Holland, England, France, and Italy. Initially Czechs assisted the foreign groups, but by the end of the 18th Century Czech companies had been established. The puppets got smaller and more stylized, and the size of their heads and hands (the most expressive parts of the puppet) became more exaggerated.

5:00 PM San Diego Greek Festival The parishioners of St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church invite all to a celebration of culture and community in the heart of San Diego.

This annual gathering offers a variety of Greek cuisine, handmade pastries, and traditional Greek coffee, all within the festive atmosphere of music and dance. Live bands will perform both traditional and contemporary Greek music, and youth dance troupes wearing folk costumes will showcase their skills throughout the weekend. The Oracle Wine Lounge boasts the largest array of Greek wines in California, while the Opa beer garden offers both imported Greek and domestic brews. There will be a Greek foods market, shopping, a kids' activity area, and frequent church tours led by Father Andrew Scordalakis.

St. Spyridon belongs to the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. We strive to preserve our culture and traditions by fostering our youth and nurturing our church and its ministries.

7:00 PM FilmOut San Diego LGBT Film Festival Thirty-seven films will be screened during the three-day festival with world, U.S., West Coast, and California premieres of features and short films. Q&As follow most films, with director and cast members in attendance. The opening-night film is Friday, followed by an after-party, and the closing-night film on Sunday is followed by another party. Several of the FilmOut films are international, check schedule for details.

Opening night is $45; closing night is $25; all other films are $10.

8:00 PM Music: Gaby Aparicio and Choro Sotaque An evening of South American rhythms and melodies. Gaby Aparicio hails from Uruguay who is a bilingual singer/guitarist who is relatively new on the San Diego scene, having moved here in 2014. Stephanie Schmitz's Choro Sotaque opens for Aparicio at the new Java Joe's in Old Town. Choro is a lively toe-tapping instrumental music that incorporates jazz, classical, fanciful, and romantic rhythms and melodies often using uniquely Brazilian instruments.

8:00 PM Stage: Having Our Say New Village Arts could have a mega-hit on its hands. Their Having Our Say is easily one of the year's very best thus far. Sadie and Bessie Delaney (Emily Mann based the play on actual African-American sisters) have invited us to celebrate their father's birthday. It's 1993. He passed away long ago. In fact, the sisters have outlived just about everyone else in the family. Sadie is 103, Bessie's 101. They participated in over a century of American history, and givedeeply felt personal accounts of life under Jim Crow laws, the Harlem Renaissance, and Civil Rights. Whilequiet Sadie avoids confrontations,"Queen" Bessie would rather die (and almost does) than cowtow to prejudice. Milena (Sellers) Phillips' Sadie and Sylvia M'Lafi Thompson's Bessie are outstanding. It's as if each plays a bucket list role. And their ritual-like, extensive preparations of a meal are amazing to behold. Christopher Scott Murillo must have imported hisintricately-detailed set from the Delaney's Mt. Vernon home. Alldesign elements jibe beautifully. And it's impossible to believe that Melissa Coleman-Reed made her directorial debut with this truly splendid show.
