All Day Czech Marionettes in Balboa Park Big Joe uses traditional Czech marionettes to tell the story of Princess Phoebe's Birthday Present. Czech puppetry was imported in the late 17th Century by itinerant puppeteers from Holland, England, France, and Italy. Initially Czechs assisted the foreign groups, but by the end of the 18th Century Czech companies had been established. The puppets got smaller and more stylized, and the size of their heads and hands (the most expressive parts of the puppet) became more exaggerated.

4:30 PM The Nazis Next Door: How America Became a Safe Haven for Hitlerís Men Please join the UC San Diego Jewish Studies Department and UC San Diego Library for a presentation with investigative reporter and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Eric Lichtblau on Wednesday, June 7, 2017 from 5:30 - 7:00 PM in the Price Center East Ballroom on the UC San Diego campus. Refreshments will be served prior to the presentation starting at 4:30 PM. This event is free and open to the public. Registration is required.

In his highly-acclaimed book, The Nazis Next Door, Eric Lichtblau tells the shocking and shameful story of how America became a safe haven for Hitler's men. Lichtblau will discuss how it was possible for thousands of Nazis—from concentration camp guards to high-level officers in the Third Reich—to move to the U.S. after WWII, and quietly settle into new lives as Americans. Some of them gained entry as self-styled refugees, while others enjoyed the help and protection of the CIA, the FBI, and the military, who put them to work as spies, intelligence assets, and leading scientists and engineers. Lichtblau's book draws from once-secret government records and interviews, telling the full story of the Nazi scientists brought to America, and the German spies and con men who followed them and lived for decades as Americans.

Admission/Cost: FREE
Registration for this event is required by June 6

7:00 PM Iranian Documentary: Plane Grove This is the story and history of the longest street in the Middle East that expands 17 km from the south to the northern parts of the city of Tehran. This is also the largest plane grove, found in these parts with the plane trees lining and adorning the street all along its corridor.

This street holds the collective memory of the Iranian people and has been witness to the country's most important social and political upheaval taking place in and around it. The street has gone through many reformations in step with the changes in the society; mass increase in population, changes in the governmental systems and social changes, to name a few, have all left their marks along the side of Vali e Asr Street. The street itself has changed names in line with the times, from Pahlavi to Mossadegh to the current Vali e Asr.

This engaging film is not only nostalgic in many ways, but educational as it provides a glimpse into Iran's past century.
