10:00 AM Balboa Park PowWow The San Diego American Indian Health Center's Annual Balboa Park Pow Wow is a cultural event that showcases the heritage and traditions of American Indians. As a demonstration of the cultural and spiritual traditions, participants of all ages will be present from many American Indian Tribes, bands, and communities. Kumeyaay Bird Singers will open the event, as we are all guests in their homeland. Gourd Dancing will follow and then Grand Entry, which opens a day of Inter-Tribal Dancing. Well known American Indian Drum groups Sooner Nation and Coyote Canyon will provide the traditional music of the Pow Wow.

This year Saginaw Grant, revered elder, actor, and motivational speaker, will be present as Spiritual Advisor. On Saturday, Danza Azteca Calpulli Mexihca Aztec dancers will be our guests. This year we will honor Bobby Wallace for all his contributions to the community, and on Sunday, all mothers will be honored. Vendors will be selling handmade jewelry, pottery, basketry, and a variety of other crafts and wares. Food venders will be selling a variety of food items, including fry bread and Indian Tacos.

The Pow Wow will also feature a Healthy Eating and Active Living (HEAL) Zone that will include physical activities for youth, nutrition education, games, and a variety of information booths with materials focused on promoting healthy lifestyles. On the southwest corner of Park Boulevard and Presidents Way.

Using participatory art as a bridge to cross cultural divides, we encourage everyone to create art and rub shoulders with people they might not necessarily rub shoulders with in their day-to-day life. We are committed to fostering a thriving and diverse community connected through art.

People can share paintbrushes with strangers, paint on a community mural, learn how to hula hoop or experience the magic of an Arctic exhibition, among many other collaborative art experiences.

11:00 AM Gator By The Bay Zydeco, Blues & Crawfish Festival Emphasizing the the rollicking music, food and Mardi Gras spirit of Louisiana, San Diego's 16th annual Gator By The Bay is the largest, most authentic good times music, dance and culture festival in Southern California. Held Thursday, May 11 to Sunday, May 14 - Spanish Landing Park, across from San Diego International Airport, Gator By the Bay features four days of live music with over 100 musical acts and special performances on seven stages, shaded dance floors for non-stop dancing, cooking demos, dance lessons and 10,000 pounds of live crawfish brought in fresh from Louisiana for the biggest crawfish boil this side of the bayou.

Since its inception in 2001 the festival has grown to showcase not only Grammy winning Cajun and Zydeco artists directly from Louisiana, but also legendary Chicago and California blues artists, rockabilly and roots performers and award-winning salsa and Latin bands. The festival has become an annual must-do for enthusiasts of all ages.

Festival tickets range from $25 to $40, with discounts available for advance purchase and multiday passes. Children 17 and under are admitted free with a paid adult and kids can enjoy an activity area just for them.

Act One takes place in 1959, as white community leaders anxiously try to stop the sale of a home to a black family. 7:00 PM Stage: Violet in Concert Coronado Playhouse stages a concert version of "Violet," a musical based on Doris Betts short story, "The Ugliest Pilgrim," and with a score by Tony-winning composer Jeanine Tesori ("Fun Home," "Thoroughly Modern Millie," "Shrek The Musical").

"Violet" is the emotional journey of a disfigured girl traveling through the segregated American South in the 1960s, to meet a televangelist who she hopes can make her beautiful. On her long bus ride, Violet meets two soldiers on their way to Vietnam. Her relationships with them are key to her emotional awakening.

The music encompasses country, gospel, blues, and honky-tonk rock. Violet opened off-Broadway in 1997 and won the Drama Critics' Circle Award and Lucille Lortel Award for Best Musical. When it opened to rave reviews on Broadway in 2014, it was a Tony nominee for Best Musical.
