10:30 AM Contemporary Cuban Cuisine Culinary Historians of San Diego presents Richard Feinberg, who will enlighten us on the ways Cuban cuisine has been influenced by the dishes of Spain, France, Africa and China, as well as the broader Caribbean Basin. He will also explain how it has blossomed within the last decade after the regime turned from the Fidel-Castro-era-nationalized restaurants with standardized fare to permitting paladares, or private restaurants, mostly within homes, with seats ranging from 12-50. These paladares have been mushrooming of late.

Richard Feinberg is a professor of international political economy at UCSD's School of Global Policy & Strategy. He has enjoyed a distinguished career as diplomat, policy advisor, corporate consultant, university professor and author of over 200 books and articles on international relations. His four decades of engagement with U.S. foreign policy spans government services—in the White House, Departments of State and Treasury as well as in numerous Washington-based public policy institutes, the Peace Corps in Chile and now—academia. He is also a non-resident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution authoring three reports assessing Cuba's economic reforms on foreign investment, globalization, democratization and non-governmental organizations. Presented in the Neil Morgan Auditorium.

2:00 PM Stage: The Heir Apparent Penniless Eraste is in love with the fair Isabelle but her mother, Madame Argante, will permit the marriage only if Eraste can show he will inherit the estate of his rich but miserly Uncle Geronte. Unfortunately for Eraste, old Geronte has also fallen for the fair Isabelle, and plans to marry her and leave everything he owns to her—squashing the young love forever. Impersonating the old man and also two brash, disinherited relatives, Eraste's wily servant Crispin dictates a will favorable to his master (and to himself, of course), only to find that even the best laid plans come undone!

David Ives' adaptation is rich with flowing French couplets, and this joyful farce has everything working out in the end.

3:00 PM Stage: A Little Night Music The Stephen Sondheim musical at Cygnet Theatre shines exactly how it should. Set in Sweden at the turn of the 19th century, multiple generations of individuals interconnected by love and fate eventually meet at the mansion of an aging matriarch. Class, gender, age, and expectations are confronted as the vocally-gifted ensemble sings its way through Sondheim's challenging lyrics and music. Karole Foreman as Desiree and her rendition of "Send in the Clowns," particularly moves. Flawless design elements, such as costumes by Jeanne Reith, enhance the beauty of an already must-see production.— Review by Jon Reimer

7:00 PM Stage: Florencia en el Amazonas Famous opera diva Florencia Grimaldi returns home to the Amazon to perform and dreams of finding her long lost lover, a butterfly hunter who has disappeared into the jungle. As she and her fellow travelers board a steamboat and begin a magical journey down the river, the lines between fantasy and reality become enmeshed.

Experiencing powerful elements of nature merged with the supernatural, Florencia experiences an awakening, sheds her chrysalis and her spirit transforms. Inspired by the magical realism writings of Gabriel García Márquez, Mexican composer Daniel Catán transports us to the mystical Amazon River with nature sounds and lush, romantic melodies reminiscent of Puccini and Debussy. SDO is proud to have been the first major opera house in the U.S. to present Catan's first opera, Rappacini's Daughter and welcomes this, the first-ever Spanish-language opera commissioned in the U.S.

8:00 PM Music: Quarteto Brasiliense Brasiliense is a musical collective of multi-instrumentalists with a shared passion for the rich musical traditions of Brazil. The music is a culmination of various forms of Brazilian music fused with jazz and other American styles, largely expressed through the distinct compositional voice of the group's guitarist, Brazilian-born Ian Faquini. As described by writer Andy Gilbert in SF Classical Voice, "Faquini writes astonishingly sophisticated Brazilian pop music in the omnivorous tradition known as MPB (música popular brasileira), which often draws heavily on jazz. Born in Brazil and raised in Berkeley, Faquini is a protégé of Guinga, the revered Brazilian guitarist and songwriter whose tunes have been recorded by dozens of MPB stars...While his harmonic palette is unmistakably inspired by Guinga's writing, Faquini often draws on styles from Brazil's northeast."

Now, the night before a big red carpet premiere that will make Bernie's career, he has been asked to name names and give up his friend.
