3:00 PM  Talk: Panel on Latin America and Talk by Former President of Costa Rica Laura Chinchilla Please join UC San Diego's Center for Iberian and Latin American Studies, Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies, Department of Political Science, International Institute and Latin American Studies Program for this important half-day event.

Across Latin America, countries are faced with limited economic growth and growing political polarization and instability. During the keynote address by former Costa Rican President Laura Chinchilla Miranda and the expert panel, we will discuss pathways to improving citizen security and human rights across the continent to provide a basis for a new wave of prosperity. The talk will be followed by a tango music performance by San Diego’s Camarada with special guest Raul Jaurena, tango master and accomplished bandoneonist.

Agenda:

3:00 PM to 4:15 PM - Panel on “The Political Landscape in Latin America in 2020”

This discussion will be moderated by UC San Diego Professor of Modern Chinese History Micah Muscolino.

4:00 PM  San Diego International Jewish Film Festival The 30th annual San Diego International Jewish Film Festival will be held February 12 (Special Underwriter Preview Night), February 13-23, 2020. We use various venues throughout San Diego County, playing to roughly 20,000 patrons every year. Since its inception in 1990, the SDIJFF has become one of the largest and most prestigious film festivals of its kind, and has the highest attendance of any Jewish cultural event in San Diego County.

The SDIJFF presents feature-length documentary, narrative and animated films along with a national and international roster of guest speakers and directors. We offer an array of films that depict elements of Jewish life, history and culture or are films by Jewish directors (which possibly have no Jewish content). The film festival also includes a collection of short films (Brews & Views), a film for teens, and a film for young adults in their 20’s, 30's and 40’s.

8:00 PM Talk: Deirdre Bair National Book Award-winning biographer Deirdre Bair explores her 15 remarkable years in Paris with Samuel Beckett and Simone de Beauvoir, painting intimate new portraits of two literary giants and revealing secrets of the biographical art in her new book, Parisian Lives. In 1971 Bair was a journalist and recently minted Ph.D. who managed to secure access to Nobel Prize-winning author Samuel Beckett. The next seven years of intimate conversations, intercontinental research, and peculiar cat-and-mouse games resulted in Samuel Beckett: A Biography and propelled Bair to her next subject: Simone de Beauvoir. The catch? De Beauvoir and Beckett despised each other. Her seven-year relationship with the domineering and difficult de Beauvoir required a radical change in approach, yielding another groundbreaking literary profile. At ArtPower, Bair will speak about Parisian Lives-including never-before-told anecdotes and details that were considered impossible to publish back in the 1990s and that give audiences a new window on the all-too-human side of these legendary thinkers.
