6:00 PM Film: Spirit of the Beehive Victor Erice's "poem of awakening" is set in a Spanish village in 1940, in the wake of the country's civil war. Six-year-old Ana (Ana Torrent) becomes obsessed with the world of myth and imagination when she attends a traveling movie show of "Frankenstein," an experience that alters her perception of the world around her. (99 minutes. 1973.)

Original title: "El Espritu de la Colmena." In Spanish with English subtitles. There will be a discussion after the film. This program is co-sponsored by the Friends of the Chula Vista Library and the City of Chula Vista Performing and Visual Arts Grant.

6:00 PM Cooking Class: Chef Javier Plascencia Javier Plascencia is a resident chef of Tijuana, Mexico. He has excelled in his innovative and sustainable style, using ingredients from the fields, farms, land and sea of the Baja region.

To Javier Plascencia, every kitchen tells a story; his is about Tijuana, the Guadalupe Valley and his multiple journeys around the world. It is based on the urban carbon and roast style, mixed with the typical ingredients of the dishes of the US-Mexico binational region.

Javier opened his restaurant, Misión 19, with the mission of revitalizing the food scene in Tijuana, as well as the city of Tijuana itself! He calls his cooking style "Cocina of Baja California," combining ingredients from the region.

Everyone's heard about the ultra-popular Inca Trail but there are over six other high-altitude, remote wilderness multi-day hikes in the region. Jose will be discussing the essentials involved with trekking at higher altitudes while highlighting these stunning landscapes with a breathtaking slideshow. He will provide professional recommendations on the appropriate gear and clothing needed to hike and camp in the rugged terrain of the Andes. Also, learn about Jose's efforts to give back to local communities along these trails as he presents opportunities to get involved!

A professor of law and director of the Centre on International Courts and Tribunals at University College London, Sands is a regular commentator on the BBC and CNN and writes frequently about international law for leading newspapers. He was prominently featured in "My Nazi Legacy," a documentary released in 2015.
