4:00 PM Music: Jessica Fichot L.A.-based chanteuse, songwriter and accordionist Jessica Fichot is a lot like her hometown of Paris: French at heart, but with a soul that's truly international. Drawing from her multi-ethnic French/Chinese/American upbringing, her music fuses styles and languages, taking the listener on a twisting journey out of the French chanson tradition, into the lands of gypsy jazz, 1940s Chinese swing, international folk, and into the wilderness of her imagination. She has performed packed venues in France, China, Spain, Mexico, Canada and across the U.S—backed by her fiery band (clarinet/sax, upright bass, drums and guitar), and armed with her accordion, toy piano and multilingual vocals.

In her newest EP, "Dear Shanghai" (2014), Fichot departs from her trademark French chanson style and takes the listener to 1940s Shanghai, with a work sung entirely in Mandarin Chinese, thus celebrating her mother's hometown. The multicultural musician covers jazzy numbers, exotic rumbas, a couple of original songs, as well as a pop classic from Hong Kong—bringing a fresh, modern take on musical gems spotlighting the golden era of the city.

5:00 PM Discussion: Face to Face with Demjanjuk On Wednesday, February 7, the HLHW series will feature Martin Haas. In 2009 San Diego resident Martin Haas participated as a co-plaintiff in the Bavarian Superior Court case against the Ukrainian-born Ivan Demjanjuk, a US citizen who had participated in the mass-extermination of European Jews during WW II. What does it mean to come face to face with a man who was involved in the murder of one's family? Does a belated reckoning such as the Munich trial permit true closure? In this talk, Haas relates the tragic history of his family and shares his experience in court. Born into a Dutch-Jewish family, Martin spent World War II in hiding with a Catholic family. In 1946 he was adopted by a distant relative and emigrated to Israel where he would earn a degree in Electrical Engineering and serve three years in the Israeli Army. He subsequently studied biophysics at UC Berkeley and obtained his Ph.D. in biology. In 1981 Haas joined the UC San Diego faculty as professor of biology and oncology.
