Snippets: The San Diego Asian Film Festival Opens!
Thousands are expected to attend two week festival celebrating talents of Asian actors and filmmakers.
A dynamic and robust festival dedicated to showcasing the work of Asian actors and filmmakers returns to San Diego this month.
The 10th Annual San Diego Asian Film Festival, a 15-day event featuring than 200 films, kicks off Thursday at the UltraStar Mission Valley Cinemas in Hazard Center.
The festival will feature films from 20 countries, including China, Japan, Korea, India, Indonesia, Iran, Taiwan and the United States.
And despite the rough economy, event organizers are planning their largest turnout ever.
"Its unbelievable were able to offer so much during a year when the economy was at its worst," said Lee Ann Kim, executive director of the San Diego Asian Film Foundation. "But films offer an affordable getaway and enriching experience that we expect our largest audience ever."
The critically acclaimed film "Children of Invention" screened at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and will open the festivities Thursday.
The epic war film "Red Cliff," which is commonly referred to as the most expensive movie ever produced in Asia, will have its West Coast premiere at the festival Sunday.
And for the first time since its 2000 inception, the festival will feature two Bollywood films, including "Tandori Love," a Bollywood film set in the Swiss Alps.
The festival will close October 29 with the premiere of "Ip Man," an action movie based on the life of Bruce Lees martial arts master Yip Man.
Festival tickets are on sale now at the UltraStar box office at Hazard Center. Prices range from $6.50 for members of the San Diego Asian Film Foundation to $9.50 for nonmembers. Discounted tickets, value packs and all festival passes are available online.
