Ballet Jalisciense

Jalis

Ballet Jalisciense was started in 1984 by director and choreographer Mary Lopez. It was originally made up of only six young girls. Mary Lopez didn't have any plans for these girls except to instill the Mexican culture in them through the art of dance. As time passed, the group grew larger, becoming a heterogeneous group. The group has since participated in many different social and cultural events in Southern Calfornia as well as in Baja California and other states in Mexico. They have also performed in benefits for the handicapped and senior citizens. Mary Lopez always maintained the idea of motivating her students to learn about their Mexican heritage.

Mary Lopez is a native of Los Altos de Jalisco. Even though she had always had a passion for Mexican dance and culture she was not able to pursue her dreams until all her daughters were school-age. Mary studied danza folklórica regional mexicana at the Instituto de Bellas Artes in Guadalajara, Jalisco, one of the most prestigious art schools in Mexico. She was also a dancer/performer for ten years in the popular company Ballet Folklórico Xochiquetzal under the direction of the great professor Francisco Rochín Hidalgo.
